TREEPEOPLE
I worked with TreePeople, a Los Angeles-based environmental non-profit, as a Graphic Design Intern during the summer of 2021. In collaboration with the in-house Marketing & Communications Team I developed a series of social media ads to promote the organization's upcoming tree planting event and show that volunteering can be mutually beneficial for both the humans and the trees. Above are three of the ads shown as they appear on the TreePeople Instagram page (treepeople_org), and below are all of the ads shown in greater detail.
During my time with TreePeople I also designed several informational posters for use at their events. The poster below on the left advertises an art contest for elementary school students that can catch the kids' attention and is easy to read. I was inspired by Mark Rothko's use of color and abstraction to divide the page into different sections and use them to create hierarchy. The poster on the right instructs volunteers on how to properly plant a tree sapling and was used during a tree planting event.
One of my bigger projects with TreePeople involved creating a library of digital illustrations to be used in a Native Plant Field Guide. Each spread spread of the book is dedicated to one species of plant that naturally grows in Southern California and is designed to help amateur gardeners determine which varieties to include in their yards. The following are a series of finalized illustrations placed in the templates I created for the first page of every spread.
I ended up sketching and coloring several dozen different plant species during my time with TreePeople and turned over all of the digital files to Bliss Parsons, their lead graphic designer, for future use. Below are some examples of how my illustrations have been utilized on their social media page since my internship with them ended.
I designed shirts, tote bags, and hats when the TreePeople team showed interest in having a wider selection of merchandise. The designs feature retro takes on the TreePeople logo, my own floral illustrations, and embroidery. In keeping with the non-profit's environmental focus, I selected a local, eco-conscious clothing manufacturer called Bella + Canvas to produce the items. I also helped TreePeople set up their online shop on Shopify and determine potential prices for each item based on printing costs. Below are some original mockups I produced as well as the final products as they appear on shop.treepeople.org.
